reddit medical student what to do during summers
I'one thousand in my kickoff year studying physics and I'g worried virtually summer. What do most students really do? I hear about people applying for internships/summer placements/etc. but surely there are far more students than there are placements bachelor? What is suitable for me and where should I start looking? I don't know what I want to exercise after uni just I know that I Need to exercise something useful this summertime. Although even if I did apply for internships and things like that I'd just get rejected because my CV is rubbish as I spent my summers at school wasting time with friends and video games and now I'm deeply regretting not having something to put on my CV
I'm planning on coming home and working full fourth dimension to salve money for the next year. As far as I know, internships aren't possible until at least the summertime following 2nd year. Could be wrong though.

I did an internship the summer earlier uni and in the summer in between 1st and 2nd year, so it's definitely possible.
Manically try and find a job all summer, often to no avail.
I'one thousand graduating in May and starting a PGCE in September, and I'm terrified about not beingness able to find a job during the summer!

I very much doubt most people have good work experience before starting university, peculiarly in Science subjects. I spent my first summer working in a supermarket, lots of students demand to brand money to repay overdrafts or salve for the next year. It's great that you lot're starting to think almost the future now, but don't worry almost information technology likewise much. Talk to your tutor, lecturers and career advisors and see if they know of whatsoever summer placements going in your department or other places.
Friends of mine who studied Physics only emailed departments of other Universities and asked if they could have piece of work experience in their inquiry departments. Identify which areas you are interested in and which universities do that sort of research and contact academics. You have nil to lose.
I worked every summer - I went back to the same job every year, so I didn't take to remember most looking for work, and I was basically able to get my bank account back into the black every summer, and have something more to put on my CV.
This is what I did afterwards my summers.
1st-2d twelvemonth: got some hours at a local service station. Moved business firm. Otherwise quite irksome.
2nd-3rd twelvemonth: nil. Couldn't find task at all. Completely deadening. Volunteered towards the end of information technology, which was quite enjoyable and worthwhile. Would recommend.
third-4th year: summer placement. This took up almost my entire summer. Was much ameliorate than doing cypher or something unrelated like a service station, and made bank as well.
4th-5th year: summertime placement. This one was a chip shorter than the previous one and then I got some time to myself as well, which was good, especially as one of those weeks was a heatwave!

This is what I did later my summers.
1st-2nd yr: got some hours at a local service station. Moved house. Otherwise quite tedious.
2d-3rd year: zero. Couldn't find job at all. Completely wearisome. Volunteered towards the finish of information technology, which was quite enjoyable and worthwhile. Would recommend.
tertiary-fourth year: summertime placement. This took upwards most my entire summer. Was much improve than doing goose egg or something unrelated like a service station, and made bank too.
4th-5th year: summer placement. This one was a bit shorter than the previous 1 so I got some time to myself equally well, which was skilful, particularly every bit one of those weeks was a heatwave!
What did you do when you lot volunteered? I'one thousand thinking this is my main pick if I tin't observe a job ("I'll get a task in the summer" is easier said than done in this economic climate).

I volunteered with a local clemency that primarily dealt with furniture and other large household goods. For the most function it was similar beingness a deliveries man. Was good barrack too.
First ane was with a translation and interpreting company, the second with a inquiry and advisory house. Lots of people from my schoolhouse did internships in various different sectors too.
For me it's been:
years ane-2: tried manically to get a chore...couldn't find one and then I went on holiday to Portugal for a week with friends and got very bored in my dwelling town.
years 2-iii: did perchance the best summer job e'er: worked on ii summer schools (2 weeks then four days) both were residential and lots of fun + very well paid, too moved into my uni apartment and went on holiday with family unit.
this year, I'g planning to work on 2 or 3 more summer schools and will possibly proceed holiday with family then with friends earlier I start my MA in September.
I really recommend summer schools that your university may run. I was a student administrator for ii weeks and so taught debating for the 2d i.
I worked as many hours every bit possible to get some coin together for a holiday I had booked later in the summer. You could look into finding a office- or full-time task, only it is of course easier said than done. If you're really struggling to detect annihilation, you could do some volunteering in your local area to get some experience backside you.
In summer 2012
I went sailing a lot
2 week paragliding grade
fieldcraft weekend
holiday for a week with family
Worked in a shop for bits of information technology
Watched a lot of TV... especially Desperate Housewives and Peep Show.
Was very bored and went on lots of bike rides
this year I'one thousand hoping to do more sailing, work at a summer military camp and prepare for my yr abroad in Sept 2013....
school-1st year: worked on customer service telephone call centre
1st-2nd year: worked on sales squad in insurance house
2d-3rd year: promise to do the aforementioned every bit last twelvemonth, otherwise will stay in my firm until my contract runs out and work for the aforementioned company in the function here
tertiary-fourth year: an internship if I get one that doesn't clash with late exams in Germany
fourth year: savour my liberty earlier I showtime a chore
Get a job, even if it is not relevant information technology'll look better on your CV than zip.
Or if yous accept a few bob spare go travelling/work away.

endeavour asking at your department if you can practice a summer projection, sometimes some of the academic staff volition hire eager students to do their muddied work. they do them at mine, expert experience, although peradventure better suited to 2nd / 3rd years. paid work too.
I drank and played video games, I would strongly propose doing something more productive
Is it actually possible for mere mortals to get internships? Genuine question.
